One of the brightest young stars in the music business has been extinguished: DJ and producer Avicii has died at age 28.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated, and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”
Avicii, who stopped touring nearly two years ago amid issues with substance use to focus on making music in the studio, was among the most prominent names in the EDM revolution that changed the face of electronic and popular music. He helped shape and evolve the genre with hits including “Levels” and “Wake Me Up.”
A regular on the Forbes list of top-earning DJs, Avicii was also an alum of the 30 Under 30 list in the music category. In the wake of his passing, tributes have been flowing in from his peers.
“Devastating news about Avicii, a beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do,” tweeted Calvin Harris. “My heart goes out to his family. God bless you Tim.”
Added fellow DJ Marshmello: “At a loss for words … Rest easy brother.”
