Phoenix Keyz Interview
Tell us about “Guilt Trip”. How did you come up with this idea for this song?
The track has 2 lead vocals chops. One represents a man, and the other represents a woman. The song is a story over the duration of their lives together, but, compact into a 5 minute record. The story will depend on each listener, no doubt they’ll all be different and hopefully personal. That’s why I didn’t want full lyrics telling you a story, I wanted the listener to write their own. But, I wanted to feel kinda cool when I listened to it, not sad!
How did you begin producing electronic dance music?
I started DJ’ing when I was at college, and did local venues and parties with either Drum & Bass or UK Garage sets. I got bored of playing other peoples tracks and wanted to make my own. I had to get all of the melodies, drum patterns and bass lines I could hear in my head out and recorded. The first track I ever made was using a music production game for the Playstation!
Do you have a favorite VST plugin or instrument to use?
I think two of my most used would be Massive and Sylenth1. I just have the biggest collection of sound banks full of one shots and percussion loops… like almost 500gb worth and I like to alter every sound so it’s completely unique. I use a bunch of different plugins though, you’ve got to just try as many as you can. There’s some great Youtube channels for reviews and key highlights on them to help you pick which ones you need for different things.
What can we expect from you next year?
I do know they’ll be lots of new music from me and collaborations. I’ve got a lot of projects on the go right now and on the horizon so I’ll keep my social media up to date! My last single for the year is out and available online December 1st called ‘Guilt Trip’ and I’ll then be releasing a free House E.P before January called ‘Recalibrate’.
