New Zealand dubstep artist Oliver Hayes, known as Olie Bassweight, was found dead at 41 in his Wellington home on June 7, 2025.

Police are investigating the mysterious circumstances of his death, with a post-mortem underway.

His sister Commented on Facebook saying “Very, very sorry to let those who loved my brother Olie know….he was unexpectedly found dead in Wellington on Saturday night.”

“There is a police investigation,” she wrote. “It seems something terrible might have happened to him. We wait for answers.”

Hayes was a key figure in New Zealand’s electronic music scene since 2006, releasing music on labels like Paradise Lost and Section 8, and founding Bassweight Recordings. He was celebrated as a mentor and community figure, with tributes highlighting his passion and influence. RIP Olie you will be missed, but your music lives on.
