Marshmello’s Big Screen Debut: Voicing a Mystery Role in the New Smurfs Movie

DJ Marshmello Goes Blue, From EDM to Smurfs.

The masked DJ Marshmello is stepping out of the DJ booth and into the world of animation, lending his voice to Paramount’s upcoming Smurfs movie reboot, set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025.

While it’s still unclear which character the EDM superstar will play in this live-action/CGI hybrid, his inclusion adds a fresh spark to an already star-studded cast.

Joining Marshmello are A-listers like Rihanna, who voices Smurfette and serves as a producer while contributing original songs, and John Goodman as Papa Smurf. The ensemble also includes James Corden, Nick Offerman, Sandra Oh, Daniel Levy, and more, promising a vibrant take on the beloved blue creatures. Directed by Chris Miller (Shrek the Third, Puss in Boots) and written by Pam Brady (South Park), the film follows Smurfette leading her fellow Smurfs on a quest to rescue Papa Smurf from evil wizards Gargamel and Razamel.

Marshmello’s casting is a bold move, especially since he’s only recently started using his voice publicly. Known for his iconic helmet and hits like “Happier” and “Silence,” the DJ—widely believed to be Chris Comstock—kept his voice under wraps until a 2021 interview. His leap into voice acting is a new chapter for the artist, who’s been busy in 2025 with releases like “Slow Motion” with the Jonas Brothers and “Fale Então” with Trueno.

The Smurfs franchise, created by Belgian artist Peyo, has a history of blending music and celebrity talent. Past films featured voices like Katy Perry and Demi Lovato as Smurfette, and this reboot continues the trend with Rihanna’s musical contributions, including her song “Friend of Mine.” With a packed July release schedule, including Jurassic World Rebirth and Superman, the family-friendly Smurfs aims to stand out with its mix of humor, heart, and star power.

Fans are buzzing about Marshmello’s role, with some speculating on social media about whether he’ll play a Smurf or a unique character tied to his DJ persona. Posts on X show excitement, with users like @SimplyIzma asking who he’ll voice, highlighting the curiosity around this casting choice. While details remain scarce, Marshmello’s involvement adds an electrifying edge to this nostalgic reboot. Get ready to smurf it up in theaters next summer
