SoundCloud’s AI Controversy: Your EDM Music Could Train Bots.

SoundCloud, a go-to platform for independent EDM artists, recently updated terms of service that are raising eyebrows among its 40 million-strong creator community. As of the latest update, any music uploaded to SoundCloud can be used to train AI models—unless artists explicitly opt out.
This move has sparked debate about the ethics of AI in music and what it means for creators’ rights.
The new terms allow SoundCloud to use uploaded tracks, including stems, to improve its services, which includes training machine learning models to generate new audio or enhance platform features. While the platform insists this data won’t directly create “new songs” for commercial use, the vague language leaves room for concern.
DJs and EDM Artists worry their work could fuel AI tools that compete with human creativity, especially as platforms like BandLab and Suno already offer AI-generated music.
Opting out is possible, but it’s not straightforward. Creators must submit a request through SoundCloud’s support page, and the process isn’t instantaneous. This “opt-out” model contrasts with platforms like Bandcamp, which don’t use user content for AI training, or Spotify, which hasn’t explicitly addressed AI training in its terms. SoundCloud’s approach mirrors broader tech trends—Meta and X also use user data for AI unless opted out—but it feels like a gamble with artists’ trust.
The backlash has been swift. Posts on X show frustration, with users like
@Producergrind calling it a “slap in the face” to creators already struggling in a crowded industry. SoundCloud’s pivot comes as it faces financial pressures, including layoffs and a push toward profitability by 2024. AI could streamline operations or create new revenue streams, but at what cost to its loyal user base?
Tyko says “this could get scary”.
For now, artists are left weighing their options: opt out and stay, or jump ship to platforms with clearer policies. SoundCloud’s move highlights a bigger question—how much control do creators have in an AI-driven music landscape? If you’re a SoundCloud user, check your settings and decide where you stand.
